Uzbekistan is considering building small modular nuclear reactors (SMR) in a number of regions of the country, director of UzAtom, nuclear energy agency, Azim Ahmedkhadjayev said at a conference on 15 October. In 2023, Uzbekistan generated about 78.7 billion kWh of electricity, of which 83% came from natural gas-fired power plants, he said.
In November 2022, Uzbekistan unveiled a new power plant that will extend its generating capacity. According to the Ministry of Energy, the power plant constructed in the Syrdaryo province''s Khovos district will have the capacity to generate up to 1.7 billion KWh of electricity annually once it is fully operational.
Energy minister Jurabek Mirzamahmudov recently said that Uzbekistan still needed a large nuclear power plant. It could be built before 2040. A preliminary assessment of 14 potential sites for the construction of small nuclear plants has been carried out, director of UzAtom agency said.
Agreements were signed with companies of three countries on the construction of 4 power plants at the Tashkent International Investment Forum, the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade reported. According to the agreements, the Turkish company Cengiz Enerji will build a steam-gas power plant with a capacity of 400 MW in Jizzakh region.
