Friday, 10 November 2023: Eskom unveiled the first of its kind largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project not only in South Africa but in the African continent. Eskom officially opened the Hex BESS site at Worcester in the Western Cape yesterday.
The battery energy storage initiative will significantly enhance South Africa’s power infrastructure, alleviating grid congestion and increasing renewable energy integration. It aims to aid South Africa’s low-carbon energy transition and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through energy arbitrage and ancillary services.
The project is located 20 kilometers west of Sasolburg in the Free State Province of South Africa. It will provide approximately 300 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to the South African national grid each year, offering crucial support in addressing the local power crisis and promoting regional economic and social development.
Mulilo and its partners have plans to expand their portfolio of battery energy storage systems, building on the momentum of the Oasis projects. These developments signify a vital step in aligning private-sector innovation with national energy goals, setting a precedent for future advancements in renewable energy infrastructure.
