The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.

Lithium-ion batteries have become the dominant energy storage technology due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and suitability for a wide range of applications. However, several key challenges need to be addressed to further improve their performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
One of the primary applications of lithium-ion batteries in grid energy storage is the management of intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar and wind . These batteries act as energy reservoirs, storing excess energy generated during periods of high renewable output and releasing it during times of low generation.
