Further wind generation development, mainly by offshore wind farms, is considered a strategic project in Polish Energy Policy 2040 (PEP2040), which has been approved in 2021 [ 18 ]. The development of the wind energy sector and electricity generation profiles have huge impact on the power balance in the electric power grid in Poland.
The findings strongly suggest that small-scale wind turbines at 10 m above ground level in Poland are not economically feasible under current conditions. With almost one-third of analyzed locations having capacity factors below 3 %, the potential for consistent, reliable generation is limited.
This paper describes the development of wind energy sector in Poland and analyzes electric power from wind. The periods before and after Poland’s accession to the European Union were specified. The development of wind generation was noted to have involved onshore wind farm installations only.
The high carbon intensity of Poland’s power generation system, resulting from the dominance of coal- and lignite-fired utility power plants and the lack of nuclear power plants, makes intensive expansion of wind power sources non-alternative and will remain so in the coming decades.
