Front. Energy Res., 15 June 2025 Thin-film photovoltaics, particularly those based on perovskite materials, are revolutionizing solar energy research through rapid efficiency gains, innovative device architectures, and advanced modeling techniques.
The exploration of emerging materials and technologies represents a dynamic frontier in the field of thin film solar cells. Among the most promising advancements are perovskite solar cells and quantum dot solar cells, which offer unique properties and potential applications in solar energy generation.
Their efficiency typically ranges from 15% to 22%. On the other hand, thin-film solar cells have lower efficiency, usually 10% to 12%, although some advanced thin-film technologies like CIGS or perovskite cells can reach efficiencies of 13% to 18%. Thin-film solar cells are much thinner and lighter than traditional panels.
Thin film solar cells can be incorporated into roofing materials, facades, and windows, allowing buildings to generate electricity while maintaining aesthetic appeal. The adoption of BIPV systems is expected to increase as building codes and regulations prioritize energy efficiency and renewable energy integration.
