Container yard management has been automated for decades, using information systems to manage the stacking of inbound and outbound containers. Thus, automated yard planning allows for more effective positioning of containers and equipment to increase throughput with the same assets.
As of 2025, 75 major container terminals were fully or partially automated worldwide, representing about 8.3% of all terminals.
