(Landsvirkjun) Landsvirkjun, Iceland’s national power company, has announced an agreement with German wind turbine manufacturer Enercon to procure, install and operate 28 wind turbines for the Búrfellslundur wind farm near Vaðalda in southern Iceland.
The wind can be utilised to spin the spades on a wind turbine, thus, transforming the wind''s kinetic energy into electricity. Wind energy is a relatively recent energy option in Iceland. It is imperative to analyse the environmental impact of wind energy generation, research the matter diligently, and search for mitigating measures.
This development follows the Icelandic government’s recent approval of the country’s first wind farm, marking a significant advancement in Iceland’s renewable energy sector. The first 14 turbines are slated for construction in early 2026, with commissioning expected later that year.
The project began construction in autumn 2024 and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027. Hörður Arnarson, CEO of Landsvirkjun commented: "Developing Iceland''s first utility-scale wind farm carries significant responsibility.
