To get the most out of your lead-acid battery, keep it fully charged and to avoid deep discharges. Unlike other types of batteries, lead-acid batteries don’t have an expiration date printed on them. Instead, they have a date code that indicates the manufacturing date. This can help you determine the age of the battery and how much life it has left.
Store lead acid batteries in a ventilated area at 50°F–80°F (10°C–27°C). Ensure they’re charged to 50–70% capacity before storage. Check voltage monthly and recharge if below 12.4V. Keep terminals clean and coated with anti-corrosion gel. Use non-conductive racks to prevent short-circuiting and avoid stacking batteries unless designed for it.
To check a battery’s manufacturing date, locate alphanumeric codes stamped on the casing or label, often following standards like IEC 60086 (YYYY-MM) or Julian date codes (e.g., 23056 = 2023’s 56th day). Use manufacturer guides, mobile apps, or BMS data for decoding. Lithium-ion batteries may embed dates in QR codes.
