The vast majority of the 20 MW of installed energy storage capacity in the Netherlands is spread over just three facilities: the Netherlands Advancion Energy Storage Array (10 MW Li-ion), the Amsterdam ArenA (4 MW Li-ion), and the Bonaire Wind-Diesel Hybrid project (3 MW Ni-Cad battery).
“As the Dutch energy transition efforts accelerate, the demand for flexibility is growing also. The challenges to our electricity grid have never been greater. Without adequate energy storage, the Netherlands risks increasing grid instability and security of supply risks,” Lion Storage said in its announcement.
The main energy storage project in Belgium is the construction and operation of an offshore “energy atoll” (essentially a manmade offshore pumped-storage facility), for which the Electricity Act has been modified in 2014 (see below), in order to support offshore wind-generated electricity production.
