The Norwegian Minister of Energy officially opened the Northern Lights CO 2 transport and storage facility in Øygarden, near Bergen, Norway. The Northern Lights facility is a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies. With the opening, Equinor’s cross-border facility is ready to receive and store CO 2.
Northern Lights offers CO₂ transport and storage as a service. Our mission is to enable the reduction and removal of industrial emissions in Europe. CCS is a necessary solution to decarbonise industry and reach net zero goals.
The first phase development of the project is the transport and storage component of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale carbon capture and storage project. We have completed the first phase of Northern Lights’ CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure, with an initial capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year.
Northern Lights will also transport and store up to 800,000 tons of CO2 annually from Yara’s ammonia and fertilizer plant in Sluiskil, Netherlands – in addition to 430,000 tons of biogenic CO2 per year from Ørsted’s two power plants in Denmark, starting in 2026.
